10 Best Indian Home Remedies for Headaches Labels: Health, Wellness, Home Remedies, Headache, Ayurveda

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints in India — and most of them
have simple, natural solutions that have been passed down for generations. Before
reaching for a painkiller, try these proven Indian home remedies. They are safe, effective,
and use ingredients you already have in your kitchen.
Why Do Headaches Happen?
Most headaches in daily life are caused by one or more of these reasons:
• Dehydration — the number one cause that most people ignore
• Too much screen time and eye strain
• Stress, tension, and anxiety
• Skipping meals or low blood sugar
• Poor sleep or sleeping at odd hours
• Sitting in one position too long

1. Peppermint Oil on the Temples
Apply a few drops of peppermint oil to your fingertips and gently massage your temples, forehead,
and the back of your neck in circular motions. The menthol in peppermint oil creates a cooling
sensation that relaxes muscle tension and improves blood flow. This works within 15 to 20 minutes
for most tension headaches.

2. Ginger Tea
Boil one cup of water with half an inch of fresh ginger for 5 minutes. Add honey and a few drops of
lemon. Ginger contains compounds that reduce inflammation and block prostaglandins, the
chemicals that trigger pain signals in the brain. Drink slowly while it is warm.
3. Clove with Rock Salt (Sendha Namak)
Crush 4 to 5 cloves and mix with a small pinch of rock salt. Dissolve this mixture in a glass of warm
milk or water and drink. Cloves contain eugenol, a natural painkiller. This remedy is especially
effective for throbbing headaches.

4. Tulsi Leaves with Honey
Chew 5 to 6 fresh tulsi leaves with a teaspoon of honey, or boil them into a tea. Tulsi is an
adaptogen that reduces stress hormones in the body. Since stress is one of the biggest triggers for
headaches, this works both as a remedy and as prevention.

5. Cold or Warm CompressFor tension headaches (tight band feeling around the head), apply a warm compress or hot water
bag to the back of your neck. For migraines or throbbing headaches, apply a cold pack or cloth
soaked in cold water to your forehead. Keep it on for 15 minutes.

6. Drink Water First — Always
Before trying any remedy, drink two full glasses of water. Dehydration is responsible for a large
percentage of daily headaches. Many people experience a headache within 30 minutes to an hour
of being mildly dehydrated. Often, simply drinking water and resting for 20 minutes resolves the
headache completely.

7. Rest in a Dark, Quiet Room
Light and noise worsen most headaches, especially migraines. As soon as you feel a headache
coming on, close your curtains, put your phone away, and lie down quietly. Close your eyes and
breathe slowly. Avoid the temptation to scroll through your phone — screen light will make it worse.

8. Massage the Base of Your Skull
Use both thumbs to apply firm, circular pressure to the two hollow spots at the base of your skull,
just above the neck. This area holds a lot of tension from sitting, looking at screens, and stress.
Applying pressure here for 2 to 3 minutes can release tension headaches very quickly.

9. Steam Inhalation with Eucalyptus Oil
Boil water, add 4 to 5 drops of eucalyptus oil, and inhale the steam with a towel over your head for
5 to 10 minutes. This clears blocked sinuses, which are a common cause of forehead and eye-area
headaches, especially during seasonal changes and winters.

10. Nasya — Apply Ghee to the Nostrils
This classic Ayurvedic practice involves applying 2 drops of warm pure ghee to each nostril and
inhaling gently. It lubricates the nasal passages, calms the nervous system, and relieves
sinus-related headaches. This is best done on an empty stomach in the morning.
When to See a Doctor
Go to a doctor immediately if your headache is sudden and extremely severe, comes with
fever or stiff neck, follows a head injury, or includes vision changes or numbness. These can
be signs of something more serious.
